Origin of Dragon Beard Candy

An imperial delicacy with a thousand-year heritage, this sweet was originally named "Silver Thread Candy." Legend has it that the Zhengde Emperor of the Ming Dynasty met his beloved Liu Liangnǚ over this candy, inspiring the legendary tale The Dragon and the Phoenix at Play , after which it entered the palace as an imperial tribute. By the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yongzheng witnessed the royal chef pulling sugar threads with astonishing speed—delicate and long like a dragon's whiskers, yet melting sweet upon the palate. Entranced, the emperor officially bestowed upon it the title "Dragon Beard Candy."
